Goodbye Macworld

The news is being reported on a number of sites by now, but I thought I’d throw in my two cents.  Apple has officially stated that January 2009 will be the last Macworld Expo that they will take part in.  In addition, Steve Jobs will not be delivering the keynote - Phil Schiller will be greeting the crowds at Moscone.

I have many fond memories of Macworld, dating all the way back to Boston in 1997.  I didn’t make it into the keynote that year, but I did get to experience the last show in Boston.  I attended all of the shows in New York and was able to attend several of the “stevenotes” including the introduction of the iBook.  I also made it to Macworld San Francisco in 2007 and 2008.  While I didn’t feel the most recent show was quite as energetic as previous ones, it was, as always, a good time.

Apple has cited the cost of attending and their ability to market via other channels as their reasons for not attending.  I fully understand this, but it is still sad to see them go and it does bring up the question: can there be a Macworld without Apple?  If the east coast show was an indication, the answer is no.
