Boys volleyball will also be traveling to some location for the first round of state play.

The girls soccer team will play in the PIAA first round on Wednesday June 3rd.

The Field Hockey team and Girls Volleyball team both move on to the PIAA tournament following District 3 championship games.

Fall Playoffs, Updated Again

Let’s start with congratulations:  Girls Tennis, back on top of District 3!!!!  Great work, ladies!!

The team isn’t finished, however.  Chelsea Yacks and Mackenzie Smith compete in the District 3 Doubles tournament beginning October 23rd at noon at the Hershey Racquet Club.  The Quarter-finals will follow that afternoon, with the Semi-finals and Finals to be played on Saturday.  The entire team opens state tournament play on October 27th at a site and time to be determined, against an opponent yet to be named.

The Field Hockey team enters the District 3 tournament as the #8 seed on October 27th facing the winner of the Elizabethtown Northern York-Warwick play-in game.  Game time and location are to be determined.

The Girls Volleyball team opens the LL League tournament as Section 1 champion on October 26th.  More information to follow.

Finally, something that can be stated definitively:  the Boys Soccer team takes on Conestoga Valley in the Semi-finals of the LL League tournament on October 22nd.  Game time is 5 p.m. at Penn Manor.

Good luck to all our athletes; stay tuned to this blog and the twitter feed (username:  hsdathletics) for more information as it becomes available.

Oh, that rain

It turns out that Saturday’s rain forced some postponements and cancellations.

First, the rain forced the cancellation of the second round of the District 3 Golf championships, leaving senior Andrew Arnold’s 1 over par 73 to be the winning total.  Congratulations to Andrew on your second scholastic championship this year, and good luck in the regional tournament which begins October 20th.

The rain forced the postponement of the LL League Field Hockey quarterfinals.  The girls will now play Cocalico tonight (10/19) at 7 p.m. at Penn Manor.

The rain did not stop the Boys Soccer team from defeating McCaskey Friday and clinching a league playoff berth.  The quarterfinals are Tuesday October 20th with the Knights facing Manheim Central at Penn Manor at 7 p.m.

The rain did not slow down the Girls Tennis team as the playoffs are held indoors.  The girls face Wilson for the District 3 title and a PIAA tournament berth.  The match is Tuesday, October 20th at 3:30 p.m. at the Hershey Racquet club.

Thank You, Coach Bradley

After more than a quarter century at the helm, head Boys Track and Field Coach and HHS Math Teacher Jeff Bradley is retiring.  Coach Bradley is currently the longest tenured coach in any sport at Hempfield.

As the team heads into the PIAA meet, the team has given their coach a dominating send off.  The team was 8-0 in dual meet competition and won team titles at the Black Knight Invitational and Blue Streak Relays during the regular season.  In the post season, the team won the LL League Championship for the 2nd year in a row.  The following weekend, the team won its first ever District 3 Championship.

Bradley started his career for the Black Knights as an athlete.  A distance specialist, he won the League title in the 2 mile run as a junior (in record time, no less).  He returned as a senior to win the 1 mile League title, again in record time.  A week later, he won the District 3 title in the 2 mile run, in, you guessed it, record time.  He still holds the school record in the 2 mile run.  As a senior, he was named the first Michael Lawrence Siepietowski Memorial Award winner for excelling in the sport.

As a coach, he compiled a career dual meet record of 207-55-3.  His 200th career win came at the expense of Elizabethtown in the first dual meet of this year.  He had a winning record in every season as head coach.  He has coached 6 section championship teams, 3 league champion teams, and 1 district champion team.  Individually, there have been 43 league champions, 12 district champions, 4 PIAA runners up, and 2 PIAA champions.

**2009 PIAA Adendum:  make that 5 PIAA runners up and 3 PIAA champions and a team PIAA Championship!!!!!!!**

Thanks Coach.

Success Continues on the track

The Girls and Boys Track and Field teams continued in their immensely successful seasons Friday and Saturday at the District 3 Championship meet.

The boys team edged out Wilson to secure the its first ever District 3 team title.  Kevin Hull led the team, winning the 1600 m and 800 m titles.  Hull also helped the 4×400 m relay team (also consisting of Kori Meshaw, Forrest Moul and Hansel Akers) bring home the gold.

Meshaw set a school record in the 300 m intermediate hurdles while taking 2nd.  Akers did the same in the 400 m.  Alec Bleacher took 3rd in the Javelin with a school record performance.  Other point scorers include David Patzer in the pole vault and Steve Feister in the Javelin.

Hull, Meshaw, Moul, Akers, Bleacher and Patzer will all compete in the state championship meet Memorial Day weekend.

On the girls side, the team took a close third place overall, just 6 points out of first place.  Leading the way were champions Ang Rothmiller (200 m) and Korinne Piper (800 m).  Piper avenged an LL League meet 2nd in the 800 to win her gold.
