10th Grade meetings

Mr. Yoder will be holding 10 grade class meetings during flexes on Wednesday, September 8th and Thursday, September 9th. Students with flex 3A and 4A will meet on Wednesday, flexes 3B and 4B will be Thursday.

Students will receive a pass in first period early next week and are expected to attend.

Don’t forget, we’ve moved.  Room 215 is the place to be!

Welcome Back

We hope you’ve had a great summer.  We’ve been busy over the summer with lots of things, not the least of which is a move!!

We are now in Room 215 (across the hall from Mrs. DeMaria, right next to Mrs. Minnich).  It’s bigger, it’s shaped funny, it’s closer to everything, and it will be more comfortable.  Gifted Seminar will still be in 208, as well as enrichment activities and other small group sessions, but 215 is now the place to be.

Permanent Passes for flexes will work a little differently (again).  Permanent Passes to the Gifted Center will be handed out on a temporary basis.  The goal is for students to use the Gifted Center as a place to exert a concerted effort on specific assignments (upperclassmen engaged in the college selection and application process are also encouraged to request passes).  Students not using their time efficiently, or students that are otherwise bothering those that are trying to use their time efficiently will be asked to leave.  Fill out the form to request a pass and return it to Mr. Yoder (hard copies are also available in room 215).  Mr. Yoder will then contact the regular flex teacher to make arrangements.  Your flex teacher will inform you when your Permanent Pass will take effect.  Please allow at least one day for arrangements to be made.  When considering Permanent Passes, use your GIFTS

  • Group study
  • Informing/Investigating colleges
  • Freshman outside reading
  • Term papers/long Term projects
  • Service

Of course this is not an exhaustive list, feel free to come up with new ideas!  Daily passes are also available; stop by 215 before the warning bell to get one.

We will have a few laptops in 215, but no wholesale access to computers in 206.  Students are permitted to bring a laptop from home this year (bring the power supply and charge up in 215!).  Students are encouraged to request a computer lab pass or a library pass from the teacher that is assigning the work if there are specific technological needs.

Be sure to check back soon for enrichment experience information.

We wish everyone a great year.  Stop by to see us!

Student Input Needed

For the 2010-2011 school year, we are looking to institute a series of activities designed to extend the curriculum beyond the regular classroom.  This is not intended to create extra homework; they will be designed to be contained within a flex period.  If you have a particularly light semester, we want to provide a constructive outlet for your abilities and a chance for collaboration with your peers in the gifted program.
Some examples:
We would like to start book discussion groups on books that you choose (not books assigned to you).
We will continue to write Santa Letters.
We plan to join the Potato Chip Challenge.
We have plans for Odyssey of the Mind-type activities (think spontaneous problem).
Also in the works is an activity on the programming language Scratch, created at MIT.

What we need from you is:  what sorts of activities would you like to see?

Students currently in 8th through 11th grade are invited to contribute ideas:  click for survey

Resources for students

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has a nice career planning tool for students, including projected job openings as far out as 2018.

This site has a selection of interest inventories to help students identify careers that would fit the things they enjoy.

Lastly, York College is offering several Community Education Courses this fall in Digital Photography, Painting, Poetry, Forensics, SAT preparation, Chinese and Spanish.  Pamphlets are available in the gifted center, or more information is online at their website.

IU 13 Sponsored Summer Enrichment Camps

Organ Donation

Junior Becky Holmes, following up on a SEE Seminar presentation, will be spearheading an Organ Donation awareness drive throughout April.  The following is from Becky:

April is National Donate Life Month and in honor of that we will be having a table in the commons set up to advocate and spread awareness about Organ and Tissue Donation.  I would love as many volunteers as possible to come out and be at the table during your lunches to pass out information and encourage new donors. If you would like to help out there will be a sign up sheet in 208 room or you can just contact me.

Here’s how this will work:
We are encouraging everyone and anyone to come by the table. Students who are already organ donors can show their license to be entered into the raffle and receive a green awareness bracelet. Students who are not donors but have their licences can bring their to the table where they can sign up and be entered into the raffle and receive a green awareness bracelet.  Finally those who don’t have their licences can sign a pledge card and be entered into the raffle and receive a green awareness bracelet. Teachers are included in all of this!

Raffle:
Names will be drawn daily for students to win t-shirts, bumper stickers, window decors, chapsticks or waterbottles

Thanks for listening and please take part in this truly life saving effort. DONATE LIFE

If you have any other questions PLEASE don’t hesitate to ask!
