Hempfield Highlights for May, 2009
Commencement – June 8
Hempfield High School commencement is scheduled for June 8 in the high school stadium. If the weather is inclement, the graduation exercises will be moved indoors to the Buchanan gymnasium. The ceremony will be broadcast live into the Performing Arts Center. Senior citizens attending graduation should consider watching the ceremony in the comfort and air-conditioning of the PAC. For those families and friends who can’t travel to Hempfield to attend commencement, the entire evening will be webcast live on the Hempfield School District website. Over 550 students are scheduled to graduate in the class of 2009. The commencement speakers, valedictorian and salutatorian are pictured above.
HHS Cultural Day
On May 15, Hempfield High School celebrated their annual Cultural Day. The program showcases the diversity represented by students in the high school through food, dance, displays and activities. Many students dress in their native costumes and have an opportunity to share information about their countries of origin with fellow students, faculty and staff. Mrs. Cindy Minnich, retiring Foreign Language Department supervisor, began the event several years ago and now works with the department staff to coordinate and plan it each year. For more photos of Cultural Day visit the high school website.
Jeff Way Memorial
On Tuesday evening, May 19, a memorial plaque in honor of beloved Hempfield High School science teacher, Jeff Way was dedicated in the Hempfield High School Commons. Mr. Way passed away unexpectedly in November 2007.
The funding for the memorial was a class gift from the HHS Class of 2008. The Lancaster Trophy House was also instrumental in helping defray the expense of the memorial gift.
The plaque is a bronze base relief sculpture of the likeness of Mr. Way. A favorite quote of his is included on the plaque. The plaque will be on display in the Commons through the end of the school year and then mounted on the wall in the Commons area.
